A heroine you'll love to hate. A hero with an ample gut and a (truly) checkered past. A novel that some romance fans call "one of the worst books I have ever read." Tide's Ebb is a filthy-mouthed satire of romance, sex and the legal profession-- perfect for lovers of romance novels who adore the genre but don't mind laughing at it either.

Tide Ebb edition by Alexandra Brenton Literature Fiction eBooks

I've come across a lot of books lately that are parodies of novels like the Fifty Shades books and the Twilight books, and while some of them are amusing, mostly that it because of the clever way they make fun of the source material. Almost all of them, after a chapter or two, just seem sort of labored because there's not much to do once you've made fun of the underlying book. Well, "Tide's Ebb" certainly makes fun of romance novels, especially the more graphic and explicit ones, but it is funny and entertaining on its own merits. It bills itself as "a filthy-mouthed satire of romance, sex and the legal profession...", and that pretty much hits the mark. (By the way, the first chapter has our heroine placing Harvard commas, or serial commas, in a legal brief under a time deadline. It's the funniest send up of legal research minutiae I've ever see. But, the quote above should be "...romance, sex, and the legal..." if we are to observe Harvard comma conventions.)

Anyway, this is a sly and sometimes brutally funny work, with plenty of shots sent out in every direction, some fairly graphic. While not much is out of bounds, though, this isn't hit you over the head humor. Some of the best lines are sneaky-funny, and there are lots of one-liners, throwaways and snarky observations to keep the reader entertained. The author obviously has a fondness for the genre and respect for its fans, so you end up with a sort of Don Rickles feeling - "I kid! I kid because I love." Or maybe not; maybe the author hates us all. But it doesn't matter, because it's still funny. (The "Click to Look Inside" feature has a pretty generous sample, so you can decide for yourself if this book suits you.) For me, it was a happy find.

Tide Ebb edition by Alexandra Brenton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Wow. Just, wow.

This fabulous and wretched thing is the literary equivalent of the Jersey Shore cast line-dancing in soiled diapers. You must love this. Must. Love it.

While simultaneously embracing and mangling a scad of romance tropes, Tide's Ebb is an exercise in absurdity. And there's digitally altered donkey porn. Going forward, all romance novels should employ this element. No donkey? No plot. The writing spins out quickly and the book reads at a fast clip. It's rather short (100 pages or thereabouts), but that's a positive which keeps this intentional disaster from wearing out its welcome.

As the polarized ratings show, you either get it, or you don't. If you're a Lenny Bruce/Bill Hicks/Trailer Park Boys type, jump on this now. If you're more the Bill Cosby/Hee Haw/Grey's Anatomy sort... keep movin'.
I loved the book and it was a really quick read. It was certainly worth the price of the book.
This was the biggest load of bull, I have ever read.
Absolutely, utterly ridiculous.
Definitely not a romance.
Do not read.
I only read this book to see what the boyfriend's kink was. But I got so much more. It was so funny that, at times, I couldn't see the page because of the laughter tears in my eyes. Thanks, I needed that!
I consider this more a parody than an actual romance story though there is romance in it. I'm cracking up on it while I'm reading it. The humor is rather oddball, off color and quite good. The book is even well written and appears to be well edited. If you're looking for a good laugh get a copy of this book in my opinion.
I don't post reviews often but this is an exception. This was a complete waste of time, the character was obnoxiously snotty, the story was of no interest. AND I usually have a great sense of humor but this was beyond humor, it was repulsive, I almost stopped at the first chapter but gave it a chance by finishing. An to think I could have been doing something much more productive, like cleaning the bathroom. Sorry, but I didn't see the humor, and if this person ever showed up in "real life" she would be smacked down in my neck of the woods, so hard she would still be trying to dig herself out. IMO a total waste of time.
As a few others have already stated you either get the humour or you don't. Fortunately, I did, and even now I'm still chuckling as I write this review. I read this book in one sitting - it's short, but it's stuffed with hilarious moments and lines. Marianna is selfish and obnoxious, but it's so bold-faced it startles you into laughter. I also enjoyed reading the funny puns made by her friend, Suzanne, and the even funnier metaphors sprinkled liberally throughout the book. I think Ms Brenton did a perfectly wonderful job with this. It's well written, it's incredibly funny (especially as it pokes fun at common themes in romance books, and lawyers' work), and despite Ms Brenton's successful attempts at making certain scenes ridiculous, it had its sexy moments as well! I enjoyed this book, and as it was recommended on a forum thread, I'll be reccing it to others, too!
